Man arrested in Nyngan over police car theft

Police have arrested an 18-year-old man following a search over a string of alleged offences including stealing a police car.

 

Emergency services were called to Narromine's Lea Road at around 3:10pm on Friday 6 September over reports of a car fire.

 

When officers arrived they found a vehicle on fire on the train line.


 

"Fire and Rescue NSW officers extinguished the fire and there were no injuries reported," a police spokesperson said.

 

"While officers were conducting inquiries at the scene, a marked police vehicle – a 4WD Mitsubishi Pajero – was allegedly stolen by a man.

 

"The police vehicle was found abandoned on Bloomfield Street, Trundle, on Saturday 7 September 2024."

 

Police made a public call to locate the man on 9 September, who they say is known to frequent the Narromine, Warren, Nyngan and Cobar areas.

 

They arrested the man in Nyngan yesterday.

 

He was taken to Nyngan Police Station and charged with eight offences:

 

  • Drive conveyance taken without consent of owner
  • Use offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention
  • Steal motor vehicle
  • Assault police officer in execution of duty
  • Common assault
  • Take and drive conveyance without consent of owner
  • Drive whilst disqualified
  • Breach bail.

 

He was refused bail to at before Dubbo Local Court today.
