Police appeal for public assistance following Walgett carjackingPolice are investigating the circumstances of an alleged carjacking in the state's central north last week.

NSW Police are appealing for public assistance after an alleged carjacking in the Walgett shire last week.

Officers attached to Central North Police District have been told about 7pm on Friday 15 July 2022, a man was approached by two unknown males whilst sitting in his parked car on Peel Street, Walgett.

The males allegedly demanded money and smashed the driver’s seat window before assaulting the driver.

They then grabbed the car keys before pulling the driver from the car and fleeing the scene in the stolen maroon Kia Sportage along Peel Street and left into Euroka Street.

Following inquiries, the vehicle was located a short time later on Bate Street, where a crime scene was established, and the car was forensically examined.

As inquiries continue, police are urging anyone with information about the incident, or potential dashcam footage, to contact Walgett Police Station on (02) 6820 3999 or Crime Stoppers via 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au.

Information is treated in strict confidence. The public is reminded not to report information via NSW Police social media pages.
